Newborn Medicine Cabinet
Creating a well-stocked medicine cabinet for your newborn is essential for any parent. While you hope not to use it often, having the right supplies on hand can make some of the most stressful situations a bit more bearable.
DAILY
Vitamin D drops: This is straight from Google “Babies need vitamin D to absorb calcium and phosphorus. Too little vitamin D can cause rickets, a softening, and weakening of bones. Since sun exposure - an important source of vitamin D - isn't recommended for babies, supplements are the best way to prevent vitamin D deficiency.” 🌈 the more you know🌈
Baby Nail Clippers: These baby-specific nail clippers have a little window so you don’t accidentally nick their perfect little fingertips.
Baby-Safe Sunscreen: Protect your baby's sensitive skin from the sun's harmful rays with a baby-safe sunscreen. Our family uses Reef-Safe Sunscreen as opposed to chemical-based sunscreen because it’s better for your body and the environment.
I wrote this post to help you navigate the confusing world of reef-safe sunscreen.
gas relief
Many newborns experience gas pain and discomfort. Infant gas relief drops can help alleviate symptoms and provide relief for your baby.
Gripe water: we called this “hiccup juice” because it helped our daughter with her hiccups for the first few months.
Mylicon: Try to get it dye-free if possible and most importantly the syringe is NOT like a normal syringe. Speaking from experience, give it a quick google to avoid a call to poison control.
cold & flu season
Tylenol - those first few sicknesses or fevers are scary so we had this on hand. I will say with our baby #2 (due in a few weeks), I plan on doing a bit more research for some more natural solutions. With that being said, we’ll have some dye free Tylenol if push comes to shove.
Super important note: I’m just a rando on the internet so PLEASE consult with your pediatrician to determine the appropriate pain reliever for your newborn.
Nasal Aspirator — https://amzn.to/42WRJBS — We used the Nose Frida for about 18 months and it worked when we needed it but we recently switched over to this device and it’s so much more effective at getting the job done.
Bonus tip: Keep a saline spray on hand as well to help loosen any stubborn mucus.
Humidifier: I chose this one from Frida Baby for a few reasons. There aren’t any additional filters, it’s easy enough to clean, the plastic is designed for diffusing essential oils, and there’s a lifetime warranty.
I use the Breathe essential oil the most when our daughter has a stuffy nose.
I did have to replace our first but they sent us a new one for FREE without any hassle.
Thermometer - A reliable thermometer is a must-have for monitoring your baby's temperature.
Teething Relief
Camilia — https://amzn.to/3SNVYv8 — A more natural, homeopathic, medicine to help with sore gums when cutting new teeth.
Frida Baby Teether —https://amzn.to/3SMnzgd — There’s a little handle with this that doesn’t go in the freezer so it isn’t too cold for their little hands.
By stocking your newborn medicine cabinet with these essential items, you'll be well-prepared to handle common health concerns and minor emergencies with confidence. Remember to regularly check expiration dates and replenish supplies as needed to ensure your baby's safety and well-being.
