Diaper Bag Essentials

Leaving the house to go anywhere, much less on a proper adventure, is honestly exhausting. Whether you're heading out for errands around town, or embarking on a longer journey, having a well-packed diaper bag can make all the difference. A diaper bag can also feel like a black hole and that doesn’t sit well with me so in this post I’m going to share the 3 categories we keep on hand at all times and how we avoid the black hole effect most diaper bags have.

“Mise en place” is a French term most chefs use that means “putting in place” so mise en place your diaper bag and thank me later.

PACKING CUBES ARE the key to organizing your diaper bag.

No gatekeeping here! Everything below this post needs to have a home and that home is a packing cube. When sh*t hits the fan and you have a blowout, you’ll be glad to know where everything is.

Any packing cube will do the trick. I find this medium-size set to be the most versatile.

The 3 essentials:

  • Changing Cube - A general rule for how many diapers you should pack is 1 for every hour you’re gone. Our personal rule is 1.5 or even 2 diapers for every hour when they’re super small (especially for our boy) because as soon as they’re exposed to air, they pee…everywhere.

    • We add a compact, portable changing pad to our changing cube as well because I’d rather have control over the surface I’m doing a diaper change on.

  • Clothes Cube - Keeping one or 2 extra sets of clothes for your baby seems like a no-brainer but what happens when you get spit up all over your shirt? I doubt that you want to walk around smelling like old cheese so do yourself a favor and pack an extra shirt for you and your partner too!

    • Add ziplock baggies to this cube or even doggie poo bags to contain the messy clothes (and smell)

  • Hygiene Cube - This cube can be smaller but it’s nice to have everything you’d have at home on the go. Here’s what makes the short list of what we keep in our hygiene cube:

By packing these essentials, you'll be well-prepared to handle whatever adventures come your way. Remember to regularly check and restock your diaper bag to ensure you never find yourself without the necessities when you need them most. Happy travels!
